Salah El-Din Road Stages 7,8 and 4

Client: PECDAR
Year: 1997-1999
Value: $6,000,000

SAK has completed the construction of Salah El-Din road project stages7, 8 and 4 for the Palestinian Economy Council for Development and Reconstruction (PECDAR) with a total value of more than 6 million USD, funded by the World Bank. The Engineer was Katib and Alami.

The project was awarded to SAK as two separate contracts in stages 7& 8 in 1997 and Stage 4 in 1998.
Works included the rehabilitation works for approximately 5 km of the Gaza main road connecting the Gaza Strip from North to South.

The works consisted of demolition of existing asphalt pavement, laying layers including the replacement of un-suitable sub-base layers, and installation of new utilities of sewage, water, electrical, telephone and storm water.

The challenging part of such work was to maintain the daily flow of traffic while performing the contracted works. A replacement detour roads were made available for traffic, detour signs and flag men were assigned to each major intersection directing traffic to the detour route.

This project was initially proposed for bid to international contractors as one package, however due to high bid prices by the international contractors, the project was re-issued for bidding to local contractors and divided into 8 phases.

It was a challenge to SAK to be awarded 2 stages initially (Stages 7 and 8) and upon our proven success in such work; we were awarded a third stage (Stage 4).
